6 steps to train a dog to adapt to a collar

2021-08-24

We have repeatedly emphasized that it is very necessary to bring a leash to the dog. When taking a dog out for a walk, a dog without a leash is very prone to accidents, such as falling on the elderly and children, running lost, being hit by a car, etc. As a novice shoveling officer, we must learn how to adapt the dog to the collar and leash as soon as possible.
STEP1 Choose a suitable collar
Try to choose a wide, smooth, and easy-to-wear collar. Don't be too tight, as it may block the dog's breathing; don't be too loose, the dog may break free from the collar. The size is generally suitable for you to put two fingers in after the dog wears the collar.
STEP2 Wear a collar for the dog
Wear a collar for the dog for the first time, try to choose a quiet state for the dog, and bring it gently and quickly. Almost all puppies feel uncomfortable after wearing a collar, so they scratch and shake their heads to try to get rid of the things on their necks. At this time, you just ignore him. Don’t laugh at him or prevent him from scratching the collar. Any attention will encourage his behavior. Just ignore him. Eventually he will get used to it.
STEP3 Distract the dog’s attention
Some dogs are really resistant to collars. At this time, you need to do something to distract them, such as food and games. Choose to wear a collar for the dog before meals, or to accompany it to play with toys such as picking up a ball after wearing the collar, so that its attention is removed from the collar on the neck.
STEP4 Gradually extend the time that the dog wears the collar
Wear the collar on the first day and keep it for 5 minutes each time. Practice multiple times, once every hour. It can be increased to 10 minutes once on the second day and 20 minutes on the third day until the dog can wear the collar all the time.
STEP5 When to remove the collar
Remove the collar when the dog is in a quiet and relaxed state. If you remove it when they are trying to get out of the collar, you are encouraging this behavior. It will think that when it is struggling, you will help it to take off the collar. .
STEP6 Reward the dog when appropriate
Snack rewards are a great way to adapt your dog to the collar.
Give it a snack when you first put a collar on it: dogs will think that wearing a collar is a good thing to eat.
Snacks when the dog scratches the collar and wants to break free: snacks can distract him.
Don't give snacks when you take off the collar: your dog will think that you will be rewarded for taking off the collar.

Although you can use coercive means to put a collar on your dog and force it to get used to it, this is the worst method. Don't be impatient, it will be better to take your time. Most dogs only need a week or so to fully adapt to the collar.
